WHY DO I KNOW THE DUNLAP RULES
WILL IMPROVE LEADERSHIP QUALITIES?
Because I spent a career working for people and then later leading large organizations where many people reported to me. So I got to observe organizational cultures from the bottom and then later from the top. I had bad bosses and good bosses, and I learned from all of them. I learned what NOT to do from some of them and I learned how to inspire and invigorate from others.
As a “turnaround guy,” I took troubled organizations and improved them so they became highly-attractive acquisition targets. I had many jobs doing many things, and fixing problems in each assignment took a variety of steps and changes. But the one element that was common in every success was that we built a WINNING CULTURE.
Said plainly, organizations cannot become high performing without first having a strong, healthy culture at their core…where people feel valued, included and part of a team…where they feel they are part of something BIGGER.
It’s in that environment where people begin to care more deeply and are willing to commit themselves more fully to the mission.
In my 32 years in business, I have concluded that it’s not what you do that makes work fulfilling—it’s the quality of the culture that makes the difference. You could be making rockets or making linguini—it doesn’t matter. What matters is whether you are in an environment that is supportive, positive and healthy.
I was lucky to have great mentoring along the way, much of which came from my parents. My father was a college football coach and one of the finest leaders I have ever known. Those leadership skills led to him being named "Man of the Year" by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, a distinction he shares with Hall of Fame greats John Elway (Quarterback, Denver Broncos), Coach Lou Holtz (Notre Dame), and Coach Don Shula (Miami Dolphins) among others.
My mother was equally adept and made a great example as a manager of the home (parent). Their rules are The Dunlap Rules, which have universal application whether in business or in sports, or in parenting or in dealing with life’s many challenges.

In 2008, he became CEO of XLHealth Corporation where he led a turnaround and expansion of the company. Four years later, it was sold to UnitedHealth Group, permitting Mr. Dunlap to transition out of his CEO role in 2012.
Mr. Dunlap is married and the father of three children. While his CEO days are over, he continues to pursue private equity ventures as an investor and founder of Guidon Partners, a healthcare-focused private equity firm. FRED'S NOTABLE QUOTABLES
“Being a Leader is a Privilege. Make the most of it.”
“Building Winning Cultures is about creating an environment where there is trust and
people really care, and at its core, this only happens with solid Leadership.”
When speaking to employee groups:
“Show me the landmines—don’t let me step on them.
We know there are some problems that need to be addressed and we know you know where they are.
We don’t care who caused them or why—we just want to fix them.”
“Urgency is everything, because minutes matter.”
“We aren’t running this company like the Department of Motor Vehicles. We are on the nose cone of a rocket ship—
it might be bumpy and our hair might get blown around, but it’s gonna be a helluva ride!”
“Is your heart racing? That’s because we are doing things that are spectacular! We are in rarified air, Baby!”
“Humans are wonderfully fallible. The best humans are the ones who recognize that
and constantly look for flaws and fix them.”
